How much does a website cost in South Africa? A 2026 guide for small businesses

What drives the price of a website, what you should get at each budget, and the monthly costs people forget about.

Pricing

In South Africa, a professional small-business website usually costs between about R5 000 and R20 000 once-off, plus a few hundred rand a month to keep it online, secure and up to date. Bigger custom sites and online stores cost more. Here is what drives the price and what you should expect to get for your money.

In short

A DIY website builder costs little upfront but a few hundred rand a month. A 3 to 10 page website from a designer is typically R5 000 to R20 000. A larger custom site runs R20 000 to R60 000, and online stores start around R10 000. Budget separately for your domain, hosting and maintenance.

Why prices vary so much

Ask five web designers for a quote and you can get five very different numbers. A 2026 survey of 56 South African web design companies found published prices for a 5-page website ranging from R1 000 to R40 800. Both ends can be fair, because they are rarely quoting for the same thing.

These are the things that move the price the most:

  • Template or custom design. A ready-made theme with your logo and colours is quick. A design made for your business takes longer and stands out more.
  • Number of pages. A one-page site and a 15-page site with a blog are very different projects.
  • Who writes the words. Supplying your own text and photos keeps costs down. Copywriting and photography add to the quote.
  • Features. Online bookings, payments, a shop, member areas or links to other systems all add time.
  • SEO setup. Page titles, Google Search Console, a Google Business Profile and redirects from an old site help people find you, but they take work.
  • Who you hire. South African freelancers typically charge around R250 to R800 an hour and agencies R800 to R2 500 or more, according to HOSTAFRICA’s 2026 pricing guide.

What you get at each budget

These ranges are once-off build costs and line up with what most South African studios publish. Use them as a guide, not a quote.

BudgetWhat you can usually expect
Under R5 000A template or one-page site. You supply the words and photos, and SEO and support are limited.
R5 000 to R20 000A professional 3 to 10 page website that works on phones, with an enquiry form and basic SEO.
R20 000 to R60 000A custom design, more pages, a blog, help with the copy and a stronger SEO setup.
R60 000 and upLarge or fully bespoke sites with custom features and links to other business systems.
Online storeFrom about R10 000 for a small store to R40 000 or more, depending on products and payments.

The running costs people forget

The build is only part of the cost. Every website also needs these, every year:

  1. Domain name
A .co.za address costs roughly R80 to R200 a year, and most registrars charge about R99 (MyBroadband compared them). Watch for cheap first-year deals that renew at a much higher price.
  2. Hosting
Basic shared hosting in South Africa starts at about R60 to R150 a month. Managed WordPress hosting, where someone looks after speed, security and backups for you, is usually a few hundred rand a month.
  3. Updates and maintenance
WordPress, its theme and plugins need regular updates to stay secure. You can do this yourself, or pay for a care plan that also covers backups and small changes.
  4. Business email
Many hosting plans include email addresses. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 charge per person per month, and their rand prices move with the exchange rate.
  5. Extras
Premium plugins, stock photos, booking or payment fees and advertising are usually not part of a website quote. Ask about them upfront.

DIY builder or a web designer?

Builders like Wix and Squarespace cost little to start, but you pay every month, often in US dollars. Wix’s plans for small businesses currently work out at roughly R300 to R650 a month depending on the exchange rate. Over three years that adds up to about what a professionally built small website costs, and you still do all the work yourself.

A builder makes sense if you are testing an idea, need something very simple or enjoy doing it yourself. A designer makes more sense when your website needs to win work: when it has to look credible, load fast, show up in local search and turn visitors into enquiries. If you go with a designer, our 10 questions to ask before you hire will help you compare quotes.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Who owns the website and the domain? Both should be registered in your name.
  • What exactly is included? Pages, copy, photos, SEO setup and the number of revision rounds.
  • What will it cost each month after launch? Hosting, email, maintenance and any licences.
  • Can I update it myself? And what does it cost if you would rather they did it?
  • Who handles backups and security? And how quickly do they respond if something breaks?

Once your site is live, set up your free Google Business Profile so locals can find you. Our step-by-step guide walks you through it.

Common questions

Can I get a website for under R2 000?

Yes, some providers sell one-page or template websites at that price. Expect to supply all the content yourself and to get limited design, SEO and support.

Do I have to pay monthly for a website?

At minimum you pay for hosting and a yearly domain renewal. A maintenance plan is optional, but WordPress sites need regular updates to stay secure, so someone has to do them.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A small site usually takes two to five weeks. Larger custom sites take six weeks or more. Having your text and photos ready is the biggest thing that speeds it up.
